Veterinary Tips for Livestock Care During Monsoon

Monsoon season creates ideal conditions for a range of livestock health challenges — from waterborne infections to parasitic outbreaks — making preparation essential well before the rains arrive.

Foot and mouth disease and other viral infections tend to spread more easily during monsoon due to increased animal movement and shared water sources. Ensuring vaccination schedules are current before the season begins is one of the most effective preventive steps.

Waterlogged and muddy conditions raise the risk of foot rot and skin infections. Keeping housing areas dry, well-drained, and regularly disinfected substantially reduces this risk.

Internal and external parasite loads typically increase during monsoon. A proactive deworming and tick/fly control program timed just before and during the season helps limit the impact.

Finally, feed and fodder are more prone to fungal contamination in humid conditions. Store feed in dry, covered areas and inspect regularly — moldy feed is a common, preventable cause of digestive upset and reduced immunity during this season.
